Story

Wilf was taken suddenly from his family and friends on July 3rd, 2010 in a tragic motorcycle accident in High River, Alberta on his way home to the family’s annual July 4th celebration. Wilf was born on March 13, 1959 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was the eldest child of Horst and Eyke. Wilf, his sister Monica, and his brother Bernie grew up in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The family moved several times finally settling in Sydney, British Columbia.
Many of Wilf’s childhood experiences would shape his life as an adult. At an early age, Wilf began tinkering with tools. He would spend hours taking the handles off the kitchen cabinets and throwing them down the heating ducts much to his father’s dismay. His love of the outdoors began when Horst would take him on outings in the Alberta wild: hunting, camping, snowmobiling and skiing. Wilf attended Parkland High School and graduated in 1977. He started his university education at the University of Victoria, later transferring to the University of British Columbia and graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Science in 1985. After graduation, he began his career as a geological engineer working in exploration camps in Northern British Columbia. Wilf made many enduring friendships as he traveled throughout the western United States. His work eventually brought him to Elk City, Idaho in the mid-80's which would become a place dear to his heart.
Wilf’s life would take a new path when he met the love of his life, Cathy, in Phoenix, Arizona while doing some geological work.. It wasn’t long before Cathy secured a job with the School District in Elk City and the two were married in 1989. It is here that they built their first home together and set roots for the next 10 years, making friendships which would last for years to come. Wilf’s adventurous spirit led the two of them on many sledding and four-wheeling adventures up the Buffalo Hump and into the back woods of Idaho.
On March 22, 1996, he would find himself in one of the most important roles of his life when he became a proud papa to baby Claire. Before long, they were blessed with their second miracle, Victoria on August 27, 1997. Wilf took on fatherhood as he did all things in his life; with love and passion. His greatest joy was introducing the girls to the outdoors and the activities he loved.
After a short time living in Lewiston, Idaho, the family made its new home in Red Lodge. It’s here where Cathy and Wilf raised the girls and created many family traditions such as the annual Christmas tree cutting and July 4th celebration. They also enjoyed snowmobiling, skiing, fishing, camping, hiking, four-wheeling and traveling.
During his time in Red Lodge, Wilf developed close relationships with the “guys”, who shared his enthusiasm for outdoor activities, holding regular meetings in his shop.
Wilf is survived by his loving wife and companion Cathy, his beautiful daughters Claire and Victoria, his father Horst, his mother Eyke, brother Bernie(Korin), sisters Monica and Tanya(John), his Uncle Ole (Carol), numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. He will be dearly missed by all.
