Obituary

KOPPEL, PETER GEORGE
Retired Assistant Dean of Student Services, Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Peter on June 9, 2013 after a short but very courageous battle with cancer. Peter died in Midland at the Georgian Bay Hospital in the area he loved and where he spent his summers with his family and friends on Addison Beach and boating on Georgian Bay . He leaves his loving wife and best friend, Ann (Chapman), his mother Barbara Koppel, his brother, John and his wife Suzanne, his nephew Robert and his wife Kerrie Koppel and their children Emily and Nathan, his niece, Jennifer and her husband Chris Kranjec and their children Noah and Julia and his brother in law Paul Chapman and his wife Sue. He is predeceased by his father Leopold and his nephew Christopher. He will be dearly missed by his beloved golden doodle, Teddy. Peter is remembered fondly by his former students, Teaching Assistants and colleagues from the Telfer School of Management and dear friends in all the cities that he lived.

Peter was born in Toronto and moved to Evanston, Illinois when he was only four years old. He returned to Canada to attend Waterloo Lutheran University (WLU) where he obtained his undergraduate business degree and then went on to receive his Masters of Business Administration from York University. A diverse career included jobs in the  Registrar’s Office at WLU and Centennial College as well as senior management positions in the financial services industry. In 1984, after teaching part time, Peter made the move to full time teaching at the University of Ottawa, School of Management. He became the Director of the Undergraduate Program and also held the position as Assistant Dean, Student Services for the last 8 years of his career in addition to his full time teaching duties. He was named one of the University`s best liked professors by Macleans Magazine for eight consecutive years and in 2007 was named one of the finalists in TV Ontario`s Lecturer of the Year Competition. Peter`s accomplishments at the Telfer School of Management include the creation of the School`s Mentorship Program for its first year students and the Mindtrust Leadership Program. He was one of the founders of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society of AACSB accredited management schools, and was the co founder and vision behind the School`s student funded Career Centre. He was a true leader who lived by the values of integrity, ethics, and social responsibility. He espoused these values and he shared his life experiences in his teachings and he inspired countless students to strive to be the best they could be. He led his Teaching Assistants for ten years in the management students’ charitable organization, CASCO, performing in its annual fund raising show for `The Childrens` Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service held. A celebration of Peter`s life will be held at The Ottawa Convention Centre, 55 Colonel By Drive, 4th Floor on Monday June 24th at 1 PM. Reception to follow. Please wear bright apparel to recognize Peter`s love of colour.

We thank the kind, caring nurses of 2 North at the Georgian Bay Hospital, Dr. T van Rooyen for his compassionate care, the counsel of Dr. Danial Schecter and the support of Dr. David Kent. All helped to make Peter`s final days as dignified as he deserved.

In memory of Peter, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Peter and Ann Koppel Scholarship for Excellence, care of the Development Manager, Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa or to a charity of your choice.
