While I didn't know Shifty personally, it was with great sadness that I learned of his death. I just recently discovered this memorial guestbook and HAD to enter my comments concerning his passing. I'm also a former US Army Staff Sergeant (Military Police Corps)-it saddens me whenever any NCO passes.

Rest in peace, Sergeant-you're in God's hands now and he will protect and watch over you!

My sincerest condolences to the Powers family. I was heart-broken to learn of the passing of Shifty. Please know that many of us share your loss. The world is a lesser place when great men depart.
God Speed Shifty.

Sarge, you will be missed. Do not fear, for there are others out there like you. We just don't hear about them. Our current media and administration doesn't want us to know of you and your kind. It seems that wanting to defend a democracy has become unfashionable. Those of us who have knowledge of war, will not forget you. I salute you and wish you peaceful rest. My deepest condolences to the Powers family. It seems we lose more and more of the men of the greatest generation every day. We need to say thank you to those that are still with us every time we meet one and hope that it will do honor to Shifty and those that have gone on before us. The best way for us to show that honor besides saying "Thank you" is to continue to do our best to make the United States the greatest nation on earth. Again, my condolences and deepest thanks to the Powers family for sharing Shift with us.

To the Powers family, thank you for allowing me the great honor of knowing you and knowing Shifty. He remains a great role model and inspiration to me not only as a person but as a NCO and leader. My whole family admires Shifty and we all look up to him and all the men and women of his generation that sacrificed so much to make us all free.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as a pallbearer and presenting Shifty's flag to Dorothy. I will never forget your kindness during this period.

Rest in peace, Shifty. We love you.

I was privledged enough to have "Shifty" in my life. I remember once he called and asked if I knew who it was. My response was simple, "Yes, my hero". He started calling me Currahee years ago. At the reunions all the men of Easy Company would call me that as well since "Shifty" did. What an amazing honor that is! I was so proud of if that I put Currahee on my license plate. One afternoon "Shifty" actually taught me how to shoot with his M1 and German luger (off his front porch)! "Shifty" was much to me and the rest of the family than only a soilder. He was and will continue to be my inspiration. When my life felt completely out of control I would remind myself to "Hang Tough". I was able to spend time with "Shifty" right before he passed. The last thing he said to me was, "I love you and I miss you". Now I'm the one saying it to him.

My sincere sympathies to the Powers family.
Darrell "Shifty" Powers was a hero to me, and it was my honor to meet him briefly in 2004 when he and 16 other Easy Company heroes met with their admirers in Norfolk, Virginia.
I thank God for Mr. Powers' life and his service to our nation.
May he rest in peace.
