Michael O’Brien (55), passed away on March 7th, at home surrounded by his family. Michael was born on July 30, 1957 in Oelwein to Miles and Cora O’Brien. He was a graduate of Oelwein Community High School and earned a degree in Communications from the University of Iowa.
Michael will be remembered for his many talents, his generosity of spirit to his family and community.
A life long learner, he was committed to community service and made strong contributions to many causes. While living in Iowa City Michael volunteered at the University of Iowa Heath Hospital and Clinics where he donated over 1,000 hours supporting efforts to enhance the experience of patients and their families. He was an avid naturalist and a Certified Master Conservationist and Master Gardner. Most recently he was a volunteer with the Buchanan County Conservation and Department of Natural Resources contributing to their wildlife population studies.
Michael is survived by his siblings, Ruth Lau (Gary), Ed O’Brien, Mary Nichols (David), Jim O’Brien, Bill O’Brien and Michele Keene (Dennis), as well as 10 nieces and nephews and 13 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Cora and sister Kathleen Hackett. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4pm Saturday March 9th in their home at 409 6th Avenue SE in Oelwein. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Fontana Interpretive Nature Center or National Brain Tumor Society at www.braintumor.org/giving/donate-now.
