Obituary

Charles Arthur Palmer, 69 passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013 in Gary, Indiana. As an ode to his legacy, a musical featuring the United Male Chorus was held on Friday, July 26 at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Gary. His life celebration took place on Saturday, July 27 at the church.

Charles was born September 26, 1943 to William and Floretta Palmer in Gary, Indiana. His public education began at Froebel School. He went on to graduate from Roosevelt High School in 1961. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force , Charles answered his call to the ministry — beginning his theology studies at Andersonville Theological Seminary in Camilla, GA. During his military tour, he met Donna Ann Summers. They were united in holy matrimony in 1968. To this union, three children were born. He became a blue-collar worker (Northern Indiana Public Service Company) while Donna Ann was a homemaker. Later, they divorced; and she preceded him in death.

Charles attended St Paul Baptist Church and later, along with his family, became a member of St Timothy Community Church where he accepted Christ at an early age. He sang in the Youth and Senior Choirs. Charles’ music career began under the tutelage of his mother. Along with his siblings, William, Jr. and Patricia, The Palmer Trio was formed — accompanied by Mrs. Palmer on piano. Climbing High Mountains became their signature tune. Their three-part harmony grew to four when the youngest sister, Donna Jeanne, debuted with them on Easter Sunday in 1960. From that point, they called themselves, The Palmer Family Singers. They became known for their soulful and harmonic renditions of standards such as, Climbing High Mountains, and Jacob’s Ladder. Their repertoire grew throughout their adult lives — including the all-time favorites, I Won’t Complain, I Want to be Worthy, and Peace, Be Still. Charles played piano “by ear” and could “pick out the parts” during rehearsals.

Rev. Palmer married Linda Nunn in 1989; and they remained mutually devoted until the time of his death.

Charles was also preceded in death by his infant sister, Violet Marie Palmer; infant son, Charles Arthur Palmer, Jr.; father, William E. Palmer, Sr.; mother, Floretta Violet Mable Palmer; sister, Patricia Palmer Haney; and brother, William E. Palmer, Jr.

Rev. Palmer is survived by his loving wife, Linda; daughter, Charmaine; son, Charles Edward – all of Gary; sister, Donna Jeanne Palmer Haines, of Houston, TX; and step-daughter, Felicia Nunn of Montgomery, Alabama. He also leaves to mourn 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Rogers Haney, Jr. of Gary; sister-in-law, Sarah Palmer of Mobile, Alabama; 1 niece; 4 nephews; godson, Jaeden Newman of Gary; and a host of relatives and friends.

His remains are interred at Evergreen Memorial Park in Hobart, IN.

And as he awaits his glorified body . . .

We are confident, I say, and willing
rather to be absent from the body,
and to be present with the Lord.
(2 Corinthians 5:8).
